BioIdentical Hormone Therapy (BHRT)

What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?

Natural hormones, including estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone, are produced in various ways throughout the body, and these hormones regulate a range of bodily functions. When our bodies under or over produce hormones, we begin to experience symptoms.

Bioidentical hormones are derived from plants, and they are chemically identical to hormones found in the human body. BHRT uses these hormones to help address symptoms related to hormonal imbalances. BHRT most often seeks to increase or balance your hormones, including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and adrenal hormones.

What makes you a candidate for BHRT?

While aging looks different for each individual, there are some common symptoms and conditions that present with aging and can result from a hormonal imbalance.  These symptoms and conditions include:

  • Weight gain
  • Low energy
  • Hair loss
  • Low libido
  • Depression
  • Joint pain
  • Irritable bowels
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Thyroid disease
  • Dry skin
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Sleeplessness
  • Memory loss
  • Mood swings
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Poor concentration

The good news is that these symptoms and conditions can improve through achieving hormonal balance.

What does BHRT treatment consist of?

  • Comprehensive review of symptoms, medical history, & family history
  • Ongoing testing and evaluations
  • Blood & Urine laboratory analysis
  • Natural hormone balancing
  • Quality compounding pharmacy

Treatment includes a comprehensive review of a patient’s blood work, current hormone levels, health history, and health goals. Based on the information gathered and the feedback of the patient, Dr. Robert Bulger and Crystal Ward NP will prescribe a customized treatment plan that may include creams, lotions, injections, pellets, or gels. The length of treatment also depends on your individual needs and how you are feeling. While some patients may require long term hormone therapy, others many only need hormones until their symptoms have subsided.

The Big Picture

Some hormonal imbalances can occur due to natural changes, including menopause for women and a drop in testosterone for men. It is important to consider the environmental and dietary toxins in your life that can also accelerate hormonal imbalances. Utilizing bioidentical hormone therapy, we can bring your hormones back into balance, work on removing environmental and dietary toxins, and improve your overall health and wellbeing so that the aging process can be more enjoyable. It does not make sense to suffer if there are safe and effective strategies available to help you feel your best.

What is the difference between bioidentical hormones and synthetic hormones?

According to the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, “bioidentical hormones have some distinctly different, potentially opposite, physiological effects compared with their synthetic counterparts, which have different chemical structures,” and “clinical outcomes demonstrate that bioidentical hormones are associated with lower risks, including the risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, and are more efficacious than their synthetic and animal-derived counterparts.”

What are the potential side effects of BHRT?

Unlike the traditional model of utilizing treatment protocols, which may place every person on the same algorithm of care, it is critical for individuals utilizing BHRT to receive a tailored care plan. BHRT has a few potential side effects which are usually linked to the dosage, varying rates of absorption, and route of administration. As your hormone levels improve, your dose may need to be adjusted. If you notice any negative side effects, we will assess the situation to make adjustments based on your symptoms and lab results. These side effects might include increased acne or irritability. Women may experience breast tenderness, spotting, cramping, or bloating. It is very important to work with a provider that is proficient in evaluating and treating your symptoms.
