Nutrition Counseling

Why Nutrition and Food Matter

When you close your eyes and envision some of your favorite memories, I can guarantee that at least some of them involve sitting around a table eating with friends and loved ones. This traditionally has been a vital way to foster our closest relationships in our lives.

Just like our relationships with our loved ones will inevitably change and grow over time, the world’s relationship with nutrition and food has continued to evolve. Our modern day conveniences have significantly altered not only the now constant availability of food, but most importantly how our food is grown and processed, which has unfortunately had large scale negative implications for our global health.

In the last 30 years, obesity rates have doubled in adults, tripled in children, and quadrupled in adolescents. Our society has become accustomed to 70% of our population being overweight, costing our healthcare system $957.9 billion dollars due to costs of diseases associated with diet and inactivity, including diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, stroke, and osteoporosis.

These numbers may cause some to feel hopeless about the situation, but the truth of the matter is that it is up to us to take control of our relationship with food again! We cannot live without food, and food impacts almost every aspect of human life, including our personal, societal, environmental, agricultural, political, and economic health. Our goal here at DV360 is to guide you through this process using our principles rooted in Functional Nutrition, addressing all 8 dimensions of wellness.

Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms?

  • Brain Fog
  • Inflammation
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Arthritic Pain
  • Metabolic Disorder
  • Thyroid Issues
  • Stomach Bloating
  • Stomach Cramping or Pain
  • Food Sensitivities
  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Diarrhea
  • Acid Reflux
  • Nausea
  • Digestive & Microbial Issues

Digestion is the key!

It is widely accepted that an optimally functioning digestive system is the foundation for good health.  However, you may be wondering, what exactly our digestive system does?

  • Mechanically and chemically breaks down our food: Digestion is vital for breaking food down into nutrients, which are used for energy, growth, and cellular repair.
  • Absorbs all of our nutrients, including amino acids, fats, glucose, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Selectively protects us from harmful compounds, blocking or neutralizing bad bacteria, toxins, and chemicals.
  • Produces vitamins and other health-promoting molecules for nourishment and for the optimal balance of the ecosystem residing within our gut, helping you digest your food, produce vitamins, regulate hormones, excrete toxins, along with producing healing compounds.
  • Greatly influences our minds and how happy we feel.  Your digestive system is often referred to as the “second brain,” creating neurotransmitters like serotonin, which helps us feel happy.
  • Balances our immune systems, protecting us from illness and supporting optimal health. 70% of our immune system resides within the digestive tract.  Without this barrier, you may experience inflammation, which has been linked to many autoimmune disorders.
