WEIGHT LOSS

A personalized Approach

Each new year we all vow to make improvements in different areas of our lives.  It will come as a shock to no one that year after year the most popular resolutions revolve around weight loss.  We view this as an indication of the unfortunate obsession across our country with obtaining a certain number on the scale, rather than living a healthy balanced lifestyle.

With 70% of Americans struggling with their weight and 40% being classified as obese, we have left ourselves susceptible to long-term health risks, including: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes, certain types of cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, fatty liver disease, kidney disease, and pregnancy complications.

Here at DV360 we understand that there are individuals who need to lose weight as part of their health journey, but what we disagree with is that one blanket approach can be applied to everyone.  Our personalized process takes the time to examine not only your nutrition and activity, but we also examine your metabolic profile, including your thyroid and glucose control, to ensure that we are setting your body up for success.

We ask you to allow us to help you on your journey of growth and health. We formally invite you to fall in love with taking care of yourself!

How We Approach Weight Loss

We spend time with our patients discussing their diet and lifestyle, including how many nutrient-dense foods they consume and their level of physical activity, along with addressing additional factors that encourage proper function and allow the body to heal. Weight loss becomes a natural benefit and side effect of addressing imbalances within the body.  Here are a few areas of interest that we like to address at Dv360 to encourage a healthy body and a healthy weight.

Glucose Management

All three of the macronutrients, including proteins, fats, and carbohydrates are essential for your body to function, and our goal is to find a balance of these nutrients that are right for your body.  We test your fasting glucose levels, fasting insulin levels, and your hemoglobin A1c, which is a 3-month marker for how well your body is metabolizing glucose.  Based on this information, we are able to help make dietary recommendations and monitor the metabolism of glucose long-term, which is fundamental for maintaining a healthy weight.

Thyroid Optimization

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the base of your neck. It releases hormones that control your metabolism, regulating vital body functions, including:

  • Breathing
  • Heart rate
  • Central and peripheral nervous systems
  • Body weight
  • Muscle strength
  • Menstrual cycles
  • Body temperature
  • Cholesterol levels

One of the main symptoms of an under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism) is unexplained weight gain or the inability to lose weight.  Many people also experience fatigue, mood swings, anxiety, hair loss, constipation, brain fog, low body temperature, and even muscle or joint pain.  Most conventional providers test TSH levels and accept a “normal” lab value as sufficient.  At Dv360. we will run a complete thyroid panel, consider all of your symptoms, and aim for optimal thyroid function, rather than merely acceptable.

Stress Reduction

Excess stress causes your body to release a flood of cortisol, which triggers your fight or flight response.  Chronic stress, leads to an extended rise in cortisol, resulting in weight gain.  Stress elimination, stress reduction, and mechanisms to cope with the unavoidable stressors present in everyday life are very important to lower cortisol levels to give your body at a fighting chance at losing and maintaining your weight.

Microbiome Health

The soil our food is grown in provides important environmental microbes that impact our bodies' microbiome. Our body is a synergistic machine of connected parts with the digestive system playing a major role in breaking down and utilizing nutrients from food for energy and for information, delivered to our cells for proper function. Research links our digestive system and the gut microbiome to weight gain and obesity. A healthy gut microbiome is vital to a maintaining a healthy weight.

Eliminating Toxins

We are bombarded with chemicals, heavy metals, medications, and other toxins every day that can disrupt your endocrine system.  In addition, there are toxins found in food, water, personal-care products, and household products, some are estrogenic. All chemicals are processed through the liver, which has the added job of metabolizing all proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.  Everyone has heard of a cleanse, which can help rid the body of unwanted materials or toxins.  The more we can avoid certain chemicals or toxins, the less our liver has to go into overdrive to protect our bodies and the more the liver can focus on the metabolism of macronutrients.
